Gary Carter street

Post by Peasoup on Tue May 21, 2013 9:44 pm

Yesterday was the inauguration of Gary Carter Street, next to old Parc Jarry in Montréal where the Expos played before they moved to the Olympic Stadium. I was very saddened whe he passed away a year ago, from cancer. Unfair that such a man die so young.

In my family, the rule was hockey in the winter, baseball in the summer. I miss baseball a lot since the Expos are gone. When we were kids, me and my brother wanted to play catcher because of Gary Carter. He was as big as Guy Lafleur in our hearts, and thats a LOT! A ball player, an American, as big as a local hockey legend. That's who Gary Carter is to me. We called him "Le Kid", because of that child like smile he always had when he adressed the fans.

He got traded in '84 and won the World Series in '86 with the Mets. We were devastated! But he came back! Played his heart out, with bad knees and all, but it didnt matter.

A great ball player and a good man. Now his name is engraved in our geography.
